歴史に憩う橿原市博物館(れきしにいこうかしはらしはくぶつかん)

A hands-on history museum right next to the Niizawa Senzuka kofun cluster.

A museum beside Niizawa Senzuka

This museum, run by Kashihara City, stands right next to the Niizawa Senzuka Kofun Cluster.

Niizawa Senzuka is a cluster of about 600 kofun (ancient burial mounds) and is designated a Historic Site of Japan. The museum stands on one corner of it.

Exhibits

On display are finds from the kofun cluster, along with artefacts from sites across Kashihara ranging from the Jōmon period to the Edo period.

Kofun No. 126 at Niizawa Senzuka yielded grave goods such as a glass dish and gold ornaments that are thought to have come from West Asia and China. They show that objects from far away were reaching Japan in the 5th century.

The displays are designed so you can see things up close, and there is a hands-on corner and worksheets.

Visiting

The museum is in Kashihara City, not Asuka Village. Take a bus from Kintetsu Kashiharajingu-mae Station to the "Kawanishi" stop, then walk about 5 minutes.

It is in the same city as the Fujiwara Palace Site and the Motoyakushiji Temple Site. Opening hours, closing days and fees may change, so please check the official information before you go.
